Cultural Festival Lamu

After quite some difficulties, negotiation, broken commitments and a last minute booking with an alternative airline, we finally made it to the Lamu Cultural Festival 2008.

The start of the journey was pretty bad. We booked our tickets with Kenya Airways already in October – just to come for the festival to Lamu; after recommending the same flight to a Co-volunteer, she came back to us with news that route Nairobi-Lamu obviously got canceled by Kenya Airways from mid of November. Not to inform us in the first place was bad – but promising a re-booking and telling one day before departure that they were unable to book us to an other airline was a brilliant show case for worst customer service and communication…

Well, Fly540.com had 2 more seats for Wing and me – just some 15 hours before departure. Upon arrival we did not regret spending so much energy – and quite some extra shillings - to get here: Reception by fresh coconut juice, local dances and music :)

The festival itself was a bit of a random mix of local habits and traditional dances, music performances and competition (swimming & sailing boat races). Truly exciting all these impressions…

…quite happy that we spend 2 more days after the weekend to relax in Shella beach, enjoying amazing seafood, dolphin watching and an very awkward constellation of two stars and the moon (which apparently only can be seen again in 40 years or so).
